Elon Musk’s Controversial Decision: Shutting Off Starlink’s Satellite Network to Thwart Ukrainian Attack on Russian Warships

Author Walter Isaacson Responds to Backlash Over Excerpt from Upcoming Book

Background

Author Walter Isaacson recently took to social media to address criticism surrounding an excerpt from his forthcoming book, “Elon Musk.” The controversial excerpt described how Musk allegedly intervened in a Ukrainian attack on Russian warships.

Details of the Excerpt

According to Isaacson’s book, Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, instructed engineers to disable Starlink’s satellite network over Crimea in order to disrupt a Ukrainian military operation. This occurred during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as Western governments were providing support to Kyiv.

Musk later expressed his concerns about Starlink’s involvement in wars, telling Isaacson that he feared the Ukrainian attack could escalate into a nuclear conflict.

Clarification by Isaacson

In a recent post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Isaacson clarified the situation. He explained that although the Ukrainians believed Starlink coverage extended to Crimea, it was not actually enabled in that region. They had requested Musk to enable it for their drone submarine attack on the Russian fleet, but he declined due to the potential risk of triggering a major war.

The Significance of Crimea

Crimea, a peninsula on the Black Sea, was annexed by Russia from Ukraine in 2014. It serves as the base for Russia’s Black Sea warships. Following Russia’s invasion in 2022, the Black Sea fleet launched missiles at Ukrainian cities and imposed a devastating naval blockade.

Reactions and Criticism

Isaacson’s clarification came after a high-ranking aide to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized Musk for his actions. The aide accused Musk of allowing the Russian fleet to attack Ukrainian cities by not interfering with Starlink. The criticism highlighted the loss of civilian lives and blamed ignorance and ego for the situation.

Upcoming Release

Isaacson’s complete book is set to be released on Tuesday, providing further details and context on the subject.
