Organizers ‘devastated’ after memorial wreaths on Remembrance Sunday appear to have been deliberately placed set on fire in Edinburgh. Commemorative poppy wreaths laid at the Stone of Memory on Sunday (November 13) as a mark of respect for the fallen found set on fire at about 5 am today. Numerous floral tributes have been charred on memorial in the City Chambers.
Firefighters arrived at the scene at 5:15 a.m., but the flames had already been extinguished. already faded by then of them arrival. Organizers from Poppy Scotland visited the memorial. in ‘devastation’. Dr. Claire Armstrong, Executive Director of The Legion of Scotland said: “We are shocked by this absolutely senseless act of vandalism. These wreaths were laid in memory of in men as well as women who sacrificed their lives and it’s destruction shows a complete flaw of respect for all of them and Stone of memory stand for.
“It will be very unpleasant for all veterans who served personnel as well as family members who paid tribute yesterday, especially those who lost loved ones. this is also huge blow for veterans with invalids at Lady Haig’s poppy factory, who put their hearts and souls into making these tributes over in last a few months. We will do our best to help the police in Scotland. with their investigation of this business”.
The first minister Nicola Sturgeon, who attended the Sunday memorial service, wrote on Twitter: “It is absolutely impossible to understand that someone can destroy a war memorial. on Memorial Day is disgusting and shameful. I hope those responsible are identified and brought to justice”.
While Lord Provost Robert Aldridge said: “Yesterday it was an honor for me to lay a wreath on on behalf of of city of Edinburgh to remember those who served and donated so much. The vandalism uncovered this morning not only involved newly laid wreaths, but also also Edinburgh stone of Memories are disgusting and disrespectful.
“We remain at a loss for reasons why someone might do something like this which has caused a lot of of disorder for each who respects memories of all who serve your country. We have reported this to the police and are urging anyone who knows anything about what happened to get in touch with them.”
