During this year, Egypt gave France a precious gift

On October 25, 1836, about 200,000 French gathered in the Place de la Concorde, classified as one of the largest squares in Paris, to follow the process of erecting the Luxor Obelisk that came to Paris from Egypt. After this square, which was previously called the Place de la Revolution, experienced the horrors of the French Revolution and witnessed the execution of thousands by the guillotine, so that its name is associated with fear and terror, curiosity prompted this huge number of French to gather in Place de la Concorde to see this artifact dating back about 4 thousand years.

Luxor Obelisk

The Luxor Obelisk is the second gift offered by the ruler of Egypt, Muhammad Ali Pasha, to the French with whom they had a good relationship during that period. On July 9, 1827, during the reign of King Charles X, France received a giraffe from Egypt. At the time, this giraffe represented the first giraffe that came to France throughout its history.

Accordingly, Muhammad Ali turned to reviving ancient traditions dating back to the period of Augustus Caesar, when the latter was baptized about two thousand years ago to decorate Rome with such obelisks.

At first, Muhammad Ali decided to gift the two obelisks of Alexandria to France and England to thank them for his help in the modernization of Egypt, but he relented from that, preferring to gift the two obelisks of Luxor to these two powers According to many sources, historians estimate the age of these two obelisks to be thousands of years old. Many believe that they appeared during the thirteenth century BC, during the reign of Ramses II. Meanwhile, the length of the obelisk that was chosen to be sent to Paris was about 22.84 meters, while its weight was estimated at about 230 tons. Luxor and moved to central Paris about 7 years. The designs of the French naval engineer, Apollinaire Lebas, were also relied upon to design platforms that helped lower the obelisk to transport it for a distance of 400 meters towards the Nile River, where the Luxor ship undertook the process of escorting it for a distance of 750 km across the Nile. In Alexandria, on January 2, 1833, the French steamer Sphynx continued the mission of transporting the obelisk across the Mediterranean, landing in Le Havre, passing through Toulon and Gibraltar. لوحة تجسد عملية نصب مسلة الأقصر

With its arrival in Paris, the Luxor obelisk provoked a crisis among politicians. While some called for it to be placed in pastels, others suggested placing it in the Louvre. Faced with this situation, the French King Louis Philippe I decided to place the obelisk in the Place de la Concorde. During the promised day, 200,000 French people gathered in the Place de la Concorde and closely followed the process of erecting the obelisk that accompanied it. Large festivities coincide with a band playing pieces by Mozart.
