Cisco Report: Alternate Authentication Responses to Digital Threats

According to the latest Cisco Trusted Access Report, since April 2019, the share of accounts supporting WebAuthn passwordless authentication has increased by 50 percent, and WebAuthn usage has increased five-fold. .

The report was compiled by Duo (Cisco Security Authentication Company) in collaboration with the Cyentia Market Research Institute, analyzing over 13 billion authentication data across over 49 million devices, over 490,000 unique applications. and approximately 1.1 billion authentications per month coming from Duo’s customer base in Europe and the Middle East, North America, Latin America and Asia Pacific. it also says multi-factor authentication (MFA) using Duo has increased by 38 percent over the past year. The results also show the growing global acceptance of MFA. Ireland saw the largest increase in MFA usage at 52%, followed by Japan at 32%.

The growing number of authentications can also be attributed to cloud applications, with a 24% increase in 2022. . There is also more interest in location blocking, although relatively few use it currently: 91% of Duo customers implement device-based policies that restrict access from China or Russia, and 63% block access from both countries.

“If the past is tools and the hope that we can defeat our opponents with their help, we are doing ourselves a disservice. The use of multi-factor authentication and/or passwordless authentication models is essential for today’s enterprises. Given the sheer volume of threat information available to us as defenders from sources such as Talos (Cisco’s commercial threat intelligence group), then we need to take that knowledge and turn it into capabilities to best protect our environment,” said Dave Lewis, Director in Cisco Information Technology. Secure Global Consulting, author of the report.
