Bruce Kent: Tribute to deceased peace activist at 92 | Nuclear weapon

Bruce Kent, prominent politician and retired Roman Catholic priest, has died at the age of 92 after a short illness. family have announced.

Vice President paid tribute for campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) who died on Wednesday.

After national service in Royal Tank Regiment and a law degree from Brasenose College, Oxford, he was ordained a Catholic priest for diocese of Westminster.

From 1958 to 1987 he served in several London parishes and as a chaplain at a university of London.

Kent served general secretary and then a chair of CND in 1980s and became an active critic of prime minister Defense of Margaret Thatcher policy when public opposition to acquisition of Trident and cruise missiles were on the rise.

At that time of his death activist was also vice president of Pax Christi, Christian Peace Organization and Honorary President of Traffic for cancellation of War.

Helena Kennedy QC said: “I’ve known Bruce Kent since student days in early 70s, when he was a Catholic chaplain at the University of London.

“He had a huge impact on my life and his commitment to peace and human rights has been inspiring.

“He wanted a more a compassionate and inclusive church and more worthy and just society.

“He was one of the best people i have ever met”.

Kent was an honorary member of Brasenose College and in in past year Archbishop was awarded of Canterbury Lambeth Cross for ecumenism.

Malcolm McMahon, Archbishop of Liverpool and President of Pax Christi England and Wales said: “Peacekeepers through world it will be sad to hear of in death of Bruce Kent who made a lasting contribution to the peace movement in the Christian churches and beyond.

“His clarity of thought and deep Christian faith brought light as well as direction too much people wrestling with complex disputes around war and peace.

“Personally, I will miss him for be a remarkably warm person.”

Kent would have been 93 years old. on 22nd of June.He survived his wife Valerie Flessati, his sister Rosemary Meekins and sister-inRuth Kent Law.

Keith Hudson, general secretary of CND, said Kent, zoomed in and confidence of anti-nuclear movement beyond recognition.

“His leadership of CND in The 1980s were the epitome of honesty, creativity and absolute determination.

“The razor-sharp intellect of Bruce together with his humor, tireless work intolerance of flannel and total adherence to one’s faith and principles, made he is the leader of our movement is beyond compare. He will be greatly missed.”

Paul Rogers, professor in university of Bradford and President of Traffic for cancellation of The war, said the campaigner, was determined advocate for peace and “relentless activist against idiocy of nuclear weapon for more than 50 years.

He added: “He never let up and was always optimistic and inspiring, even in the most difficult of times”.
