British minister: Lebanon is in crisis and its leaders must make urgent reforms

The British Minister of State for the Middle East, James Cleverly, said today, Monday, that Lebanon is in crisis and called on its leaders “to carry out urgent reforms to achieve stability.”

And he added via “Twitter” that he spoke to the Lebanese ambassador In Britain, Rami Mortada today about developments in Lebanon, and “and the repercussions if Lebanon’s leaders do not respond.”

Lebanese politicians, who have failed to do anything to stop the collapse, have been wrangling for more than a year over forming a new government to solve Replacing those that resigned in the wake of the Beirut port explosion on August 4, 2020.

The formation of a new government capable of implementing reforms is a necessary condition for the flow of foreign aid.

A US senator said During a visit to Beirut last week, Lebanon was in a state of “free fall” and his story should not become a “terrifying story”, expressing his hope that a government would be formed this week to begin addressing its financial collapse.

The statement reflects the growing concern about The situation in Lebanon, where a financial collapse that began in 2019 reached the stage of a severe crisis last month, with a shortage of fuel that paralyzed the country and sparked security incidents and warnings that the worst is yet to come.

Another senator in a delegation from the US Congress said that the Iranian fuel shipped by the Hezbollah militia to Lebanon is accompanied by complications, ruling out that this is an attempt by the Iranians to “seize the shot.”

The financial crisis represents the biggest threat to Lebanon’s stability since The civil war that raged from 1975 to 1990.

More than half of Lebanon’s population of six million fell into poverty. The World Bank says that the country is experiencing one of the most severe recessions in the modern era, with the value of the currency declining by more than 90% and the financial system being paralyzed.

Senator Richard Blumenthal told reporters at the end of a two-day visit: “Lebanon In the event of a free fall… We have seen this movie before and it is a terrifying story… But the good thing is that this can and should be avoided.”
