Twitter is testing personalized blocking of accounts. Depending on the relationship with the respective user and the published content, accounts are muted on a weekly basis.

Not all unwanted content is automatically blocked by platforms. Even content that is compatible with the community guidelines can lead to a bad mood, distraction or offense in the individual user. That’s why Twitter is now personalizing its safety features, as Product Manager Twitter’s Product Manager Jarrod Doherty reports Protect harassment, hate messages, or other unwanted content. As reported by Twitter, the settings can be adjusted personally.

“Security means something different for everyone”

“Security means different things to everyone,” explains Doherty. The unwanted content could be insults and hate messages as well as repeated unwanted markings or other disruptive interactions.

The system calculates the likelihood of certain accounts posting unwanted content. These are then blocked for seven days. This means that they can no longer follow the respective account, no longer see the tweets and can no longer send direct messages.

Personalized blocking of accounts

Both the published content and the relationship between the respective users are included in the calculation. Accounts that are subscribed to or with which there is a lot of interaction will not be blocked for the time being.

Because errors are likely, the blocked accounts can be removed View in the settings and release again – the system learns from such corrections.

The new security mode is currently available to a small English-speaking test group available on iOS, Android and in the web version. After further adjustments and improvements, the features are to be rolled out for everyone.
