Alvi asks ECP to offer dates for general elections

ISLAMABAD: President Arif Alvi addresses the Electoral Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to propose dates for in next general elections to be held within 90 days of dissolution of National Assembly, its secretariat announced Wednesday.

“In a letter dated April 5, 2022, addressed to the ECP, the Secretariat of the President asked for a date(s) for holding general elections within 90 days of of dissolution of National Assembly, i.e. April 3, 2022 in conformity with provisions of Constitution of Pakistan,” the statement said. on Twitter President said.

The letter mentioned that the ECP was referred to that point 5-A of Article 48 and paragraph 2 of Article 224 of The Constitution provides that the President sets a date no later than 90 days from the date of of dissolution of National Assembly, for holding general elections to the lower house.

“To carry out mandate of Constitution of date announcement of general elections, consultations with election Committee required under Section 57(1) of Election Law 2017,” the letter reads.

The President, having received advice from prime minister dismissed the assembly on April 3 so new elections can be held.

In accordance with the Constitution, temporary government inclusive of the opposition will now see the country in time for the elections to be held within 90 days.
