Introduction
Today, Saturday, the Sudanese Foreign Ministry expressed dissatisfaction with the statements made yesterday by US Ambassador to Khartoum John Godfrey regarding the conflict in the country.
A Sudanese Foreign Ministry statement released by a Sudanese news agency said Godfrey’s statements “contradict diplomatic norms and rules and do not help resolve the crisis.”
She added that the US ambassador’s talk of the Sudanese army as the equivalent of the Rapid Support Force “lacks fairness and moral coherence.” “We expect the US Ambassador and his government to correct this unbalanced and misguided position,” she added.
Godfrey said on Friday that the warring parties in Sudan have proven they are “unable to govern” and that they must end the conflict and hand power over to a civilian transitional government.
“The belligerents who have proven themselves incapable of governing the country should end the conflict and hand over power to a civilian transitional government,” Godfrey added on Twitter. “The future that the Sudanese people will build for themselves can only be achieved once security is restored,” he added.
War and Famine
The United Nations has warned that war and famine threaten to completely “destroy” Sudan in light of the fierce fighting that has been taking place in that country since April 15 between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, and this is happening at a time when the head of the Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan makes its first internal and external trips since the outbreak of hostilities.
About 5,000 people have died in the fighting so far, according to the non-governmental organization ACLED, but the real losses are likely higher given that many parts of the country are completely cut off and both sides refuse to report their losses.
In four months of fighting, more than 4.6 million people were forced to leave their homes inside the country or fled to neighboring countries.
Since April last year, there have been clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan, resulting in the deaths of hundreds and millions of Sudanese.
