On Tuesday, the Russian Defense Ministry said one of its warplanes was sent to meet two American bombers over the Baltic Sea that were approaching the Russian border.
And the Ministry of Defense stated in Telegram: “After the withdrawal of two foreign combat aircraft from the borders of Russia, the Russian fighter returned to its air base” without any significant incidents.
The ministry said the two planes in question are US Air Force B-1B strategic bombers and were “approaching Russian borders,” explaining that a Su-27 fighter was sent to intercept them.
She added that the Russian border was not violated. The Russian ministry said that “the flight of the Russian fighter took place in strict accordance with the rules of international airspace.”
Accidents between Russian aircraft and aircraft from other NATO countries have become more frequent in recent years, even before the start of the war in Ukraine.
Last week, a similar incident took place over the Baltic Sea between a Russian fighter jet and two French and German military aircraft.
In early May, Warsaw reported that a Russian pursuit approached a Polish border aircraft operating in the Black Sea as part of the European border agency Frontex, putting it at risk.
A month earlier, two Russian warplanes flew to intercept an American Reaper MQ-9 in the Black Sea, which subsequently crashed. The incident sparked tensions between Washington and Moscow.
