Google is developing arm-based chips for tablets and notebooks with Chrome OS, as reported by Nikkei Asia magazine. In 2023, the first devices with their own chips should come onto the market, as Nikkei Asia has learned from three anonymous sources according to its own information.
Own chips ensure competitiveness
According to the report, Google sees its own production of processors as elementary for competitiveness. Competing companies such as Amazon, Facebook and Microsoft are also increasingly relying on their own chips.
Especially Apple’s departure from Intel and the successful switch to arm based Macs moved Google to the decision, writes Nikkei Asia.
Pixel 6 was just the beginning
Google also wants to continue working flat out on the mobile processors for smartphones and other devices. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are said to be equipped with their own tensor chip for the first time.
The chips are based on Samsung’s Exynos 9855 and are said to be from Google only slightly adjusted. However, Google is recruiting engineers worldwide for its own chip production.
Google has instructed its suppliers to reduce the production capacity by 50 compared to 2019 Increase percent. So far, Google has not commented on the report.
