According to AMD, FidelityFX Super Resolution can spit out up to double the number of frames per second when it upscales games to 4k resolutions. The technique comes with four fixed presets: Performance, Balanced, Quality and Ultra Quality. Demonstrations of this were already given at the beginning of this month, when AMD unveiled the technology at Computex 2021.
The entire upscaling technique is built on DirectX12, but would apparently be relatively easy to implement for game developers, including on DirectX11 or the Vulkan API. FidelityFX Super Resolution falls under AMD’s own GPUOpen initiative, meaning the technology should remain as open-source as possible. In July, the source code of FSR should be published on that same platform.
