London City is the first major airport to remotely control air traffic

The new traffic control tower at London City Airport is 115 kilometers from the runway, but will use a number of digital data to create a “augmented reality” sight. It will be the first major international airport in the world to be fully controlled by a remote digital air traffic tower. The control center is located in Swanwick, Hampshire

a team has been set up and trained to communicate with aircraft using live images from 16 high-resolution cameras installed in a multi-million pound investment and real-time data, beeps and radar information from mast-mounted sensors

*) The live broadcast via an independent, secure fiber optic network is displayed on 14 HD screens in the Swanwick control room to provide a panoramic view. This can be covered by digital data, which the airport claims results in an “augmented reality picture.”

The data includes information such as call signs, altitude and speed of all aircraft, weather data and moving ability to track objects. Scanning, tilt-and-zoom cameras can magnify images up to 30x for close-up examination.

“Digital tower technology kicks off a blueprint that has remained largely unchanged for 100 years, allowing us to safely control almost anywhere. aircraft while providing our controllers with valuable new assets that would be impossible in a traditional control tower, “said Juliet Kennedy, Director of Operations at NATS, British Air Traffic Service.

According to the airport, the new technology improves managerial situational awareness, enabling quick and informed decisions to be made to improve safety and operational efficiency. The technology was pioneered by Saab Digital Air TrafficSolutions, which successfully tested and tested the system at Örnsköldsvik and Sundsvall airports in Sweden.

The digital control tower was completed in 2019 and in the testing period before its full commissioning. fell through. The 30-year-old analog tower, which is undergoing major modernization, will be transformed as part of the airport’s modernization program.
