What People Want Most in Life
Introduction
Many of us spend years in therapy hoping that our therapists will ask us what we truly want in life, but unfortunately, this question is often never posed. Consequently, we find ourselves pursuing small desires while holding ourselves back. However, after becoming a psychotherapist, I have discovered that there are nine things that people want most in life.
1. To be Loved
Love comes in various forms, whether it’s through physical affection, verbal expressions, or simply knowing that you are cared for. It’s important to appreciate and cherish the love in our lives, even when it becomes familiar.
2. To be Understood
In order to feel understood by others, it is crucial to first understand ourselves. Reflect on your identity and the consistency that defines you. This self-awareness is a lifelong journey.
3. To have Power
Desiring power is natural, but it should not be used as a means to compensate for personal insecurities. True power lies in authenticity and taking responsibility for our choices.
4. To have (and give) Attention
Being present and attentive to loved ones can bring immense fulfillment. By focusing on the people we care about, we can strengthen our relationships and feel less deprived.
5. To have Freedom
Freedom means different things to different individuals. It is essential to define the type of freedom that aligns with our current stage in life and adjust our commitments accordingly.
6. To Create
Creativity can be found in everyday observations and curiosity. Express yourself, challenge your perspectives, and embrace new experiences.
7. To Belong
Feeling comfortable with who we are, even in moments of awkwardness, allows us to navigate a sense of belonging. Trying to fit in hinders true belonging.
8. To Win
Celebrate your successes, no matter how small they may seem. The definition of winning varies, so honor your achievements according to your personal standards.
9. To Connect
Building connections with others is an essential aspect of a fulfilling life. Investing in relationships and fostering meaningful connections brings joy and fulfillment.
