U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo Visits Beijing for High-Level Talks
Meeting with Chinese Officials and U.S. Business Leaders
Gina Raimondo, the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, is embarking on a crucial trip to Beijing, where she will engage in discussions with senior Chinese officials and U.S. business leaders. These talks hold significant importance for the economic ties between the two countries.
According to Susan Thornton, a former senior U.S. diplomat, Raimondo’s visit will be challenging due to the need to address Chinese concerns about the U.S.’s alleged attempts to restrain the Chinese economy and hinder its development. Thornton highlighted Raimondo’s goal of advancing the interests of American businesses while also promoting and stabilizing trade relations with China.
Wang Wentao’s Invitation and Agenda
Raimondo’s visit comes at the invitation of her counterpart, Chinese Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao. Wang expressed China’s readiness to collaborate in creating a more favorable policy environment for businesses from both countries.
The agenda for Raimondo’s visit likely includes discussions on improving tourism, export controls, and cross-border data flows. It is worth noting that travel from China to the U.S. has only recovered to 30% of pre-pandemic levels.
Challenges and the State of the Chinese Economy
When asked about the possibility of reversing tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump, Thornton expressed doubt that it would happen as a result of this trip. She pointed out that the Chinese economy is facing more difficulties than initially estimated, and the U.S. also recognizes the potential risks posed by its decline.
China recently reported second-quarter GDP below expectations and record-high youth unemployment. However, the detailed breakdown of the overall figures has been temporarily suspended. Thornton emphasized the mutual interest of stabilizing the trade relationship between the two largest economic powers in the world.
