Tesla Appoints Vaibhav Taneja as New CFO, Replacing Zach Kirkhorn

Tesla Inc. Promotes Talent from Within

Tesla Inc. Prefers Internal Promotions

Tesla Inc. has a long-standing practice of promoting talent from within the company. Outside hires do not tend to stay for long in Tesla’s fast-paced and driven culture. Working for Elon Musk requires a certain level of stamina.

The recent appointment of Vaibhav Taneja as the new CFO surprised Tesla watchers, as he already held the role of chief accounting officer. Taneja replaced Zach Kirkhorn, a 13-year Tesla veteran who stepped down abruptly from the CFO position.

Unlike Kirkhorn, who was known for his calm and steady presence, Taneja is a lesser-known figure. He has only briefly spoken on one Tesla earnings call in early 2019.

Taneja, aged 45, did not respond to requests for comment.

Strategic Timing for Tesla’s CFO Change

The change in CFO comes at a critical juncture for Tesla. The company is currently constructing a new factory in Mexico and preparing to launch its Cybertruck pickup amidst increasing competition in the electric vehicle market. In order to maintain its leading position, Tesla has been reducing prices across its product lineup, which has impacted profitability.

Taneja began his career in New Delhi and graduated from Delhi University in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in commerce. He then spent almost 17 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers, Tesla’s longstanding accounting firm.

In 2016, Taneja joined SolarCity as the corporate controller. Shortly after, Tesla acquired the solar panel installer, which led to shareholders suing Musk and Tesla’s board for allegedly hiding SolarCity’s financial troubles.

Taneja became Tesla’s corporate controller in May 2018 and was appointed chief accounting officer in March 2019. His predecessor, Dave Morton, had been recruited from Seagate Technology Plc but resigned after less than a month.

As of July 7, Taneja owned approximately 105,000 shares of Tesla, valued at about $26 million.

Tesla currently has four executive officers: Elon Musk, Drew Baglino (senior vice president of powertrain and energy engineering), Tom Zhu (senior vice president of automotive), and Vaibhav Taneja.
