Former President Donald Trump’s Attorney Believes Mike Pence Will Be a Key Witness in Election Case

Introduction

Former President Donald Trump’s attorney, John Lauro, expressed his belief that former Vice President Mike Pence will be a crucial witness in the federal case regarding Trump’s alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Trump’s Indictment and Pressure on Pence

Trump has been indicted on four federal felony charges, accusing him of attempting to invalidate legitimate votes and undermine the 2020 presidential race. The indictment reveals how Trump and his legal team applied pressure on Pence to reject Joe Biden’s victory by refusing to certify the results in the Senate on January 6, 2021. Pence declined, and during the Capitol attack, he had to be evacuated as the mob called for his hanging.

Additional Charges Against Trump

Besides the election-related charges, the former president faces additional federal charges related to classified documents he retained after leaving office in 2021. He has also been charged by Manhattan prosecutors for falsifying business records connected to hush money payments made to women who claimed to have had extramarital affairs with him.

Pence’s Potential Testimony

While Pence has not been officially summoned to testify in the election case, Lauro stated on ABC’s “This Week” that he believes Pence’s testimony would demonstrate that Trump did not act with criminal intent.

Pence’s Commitment to Following the Law

Pence, in an interview with CBS’ “Face the Nation,” mentioned that if he is eventually asked to testify, he will abide by the law.

Trump’s Request to Pause Voting

During an interview with CNN’s “State of the Union,” Lauro revealed that Trump and his lawyers requested Pence to “pause the voting” to allow states time to audit the votes. However, Pence clarified in his CNN interview that this was not the complete story. According to him, Trump’s lawyers later asked him to outright reject votes, which he deemed as an attempt to overturn the election. Pence emphasized that no vice president in American history had ever taken such action and that it should not occur again.
