The Ukrainian Capital Kyiv Targeted by Russian Airstrike

Military Administration Confirms Attack

The military administration of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv said Russia launched an airstrike on Kyiv in the early hours of Tuesday morning local time.

“Air defense systems (to repel an attack) are operating on the outskirts of Kyiv,” said Sergey Popko, head of the department of the Telegram messenger.

White House’s Response

For its part, the White House said it does not support attacks inside Russia, in response to a question about the attack by two drones from Ukraine that damaged buildings in Moscow earlier on Monday.

White House Press Secretary’s Statement

White House press secretary Karen Jean-Pierre told reporters: “In general, we do not support terrorist attacks inside Russia.”

Russia announced tough retaliatory measures against Ukraine after two strikes carried out by two drones. One of them took place near the headquarters of the Russian Ministry of Defense, where the attack was described as an unscrupulous act of terrorism.

Dmitry Medvedev, the former Russian president and deputy head of the Russian Security Council, said on Monday that Moscow needs to expand the scope of its targets in Ukraine.

He wrote on the Telegram app: “We need to select non-traditional targets for our strikes. Not only storage facilities, energy centers and oil depots.”

This came after two drones attacked Moscow on Monday morning.

Ukrainian Defense Ministry’s Special Operation

The Agence France Presse news agency, citing a source in the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, said the attack was a “special operation” carried out by Kiev.

The source, who declined to be named, said that “the attack by two drones of Moscow on Monday was a special operation carried out by the Military Intelligence Service” of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Russia reserves the right to take “tough retaliatory measures” after the terrorist attacks in the form of marches against Moscow and the Crimean peninsula, which was annexed by Russia.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said: “We view these events as a new appeal to terrorist methods … to intimidate the civilian population”, accusing the Westerners of being “behind the brazen actions” of Kiev, adding that “the Russian Federation reserves the right to take tough retaliatory measures.”
