Pediatric Oncologist Emphasizes the Importance of Consulting a Doctor for Congenital Birthmarks
Introduction
Pediatric oncologist Dr. Alexandra Naumova said that children born with congenital birthmarks should be consulted by an oncologist.
Understanding Birthmarks
In a conversation with the Izvestia newspaper, the doctor pointed out that birthmarks are pigmented formations on the skin that we used to call moles. It is crucial to pay attention to any changes that occur in them and consult a doctor about this.
Changes in Birthmarks
According to Dr. Naumova, birthmarks can change during a person’s life, and new ones can appear before they reach the age of 50.
Risks and Considerations
Dr. Naumova states, “All children with congenital nevi should consult a pediatric oncologist, as they are prone to skin cancer. Therefore, doctors need to decide whether to remove such nevi from a child at the right time. In adolescents, nevi can be caused by Dysplasia, that is, atypical and still benign, but undergoing some changes that the doctor must identify in time.”
When to Seek Medical Attention
Dr. Naumova emphasizes that all pigmented nevi should be examined by a pediatric oncologist in the following cases:
- If a child was diagnosed with cancer at an early age and underwent chemotherapy
- If the birthmark began to hurt, bleed or itch
- If it grows rapidly (doubles or more within a month or two)
- If they suddenly change color (especially if they change color to blue, gray or black)
Treatment and Diagnosis
Dr. Naumova explains, “If a birthmark causes suspicion in the doctor during his examination, he will decide to remove it surgically. After its removal, it must undergo a histological examination, and only after that it will be possible to determine whether it is malignant or benign (dysplasia). Speaking about the removal of a birthmark, it must be emphasized that laser removal of pigmented formations is impossible since after that it is impossible to determine whether they are malignant or not, and this is very important for monitoring the human condition later.”
