The Similarities and Differences Between Instagram Threads and Twitter

Introduction

After the Instagram platform officially launched its new Threads app, which is similar to the Twitter microblogging platform, many have been asking what is the difference between the two?

Launched by Facebook-owning company Meta, the new Threads app appears to be similar to Twitter, but without US billionaire Elon Musk, according to a Wall Street Journal report, in comparison between the two apps.

Similarities Between Threads and Twitter

They are based on short posts and messages that the user can share with their followers.

Themes, like Twitter, allow you to post texts, images, links, and videos.

Using Threads is as easy as using Twitter, but Threads requires an Instagram account, which is also owned by Meta.

Using Threads

After downloading the app from iOS or Android, you will be prompted to sign in to your Instagram account and complete your profile in topics. You can follow the same people you follow on Instagram, just select some of them, or not follow any of them at all.

The app is available in over 100 countries, but not in the European Union, where regulatory issues will delay its launch. Meta is subject to the new Digital Markets Act, which imposes strict regulations on large internet companies in the European Union.

One of these rules restricts the transfer of personal data between different products, as is the case between Instagram and Threads.

Differences Between Threads and Twitter

There are several items that are not currently in the Teds app, with Twitter pioneering them, namely:

1- Followers feed

There is currently only one main algorithmic feed available on Threads, which includes posts from people you follow and other popular people on the service.

2 – unlock button

You cannot edit your posts once posted to Threads, while Twitter allows it for Twitter Blue subscribers.

3 – number of characters

The limit is 500 characters and nothing will alert you that you’ve crossed that threshold until you post.

4 – search

You can search other accounts, but not words in messages.

5 – Direct messages

You can’t send private messages through Threads, you’ll have to go back to Instagram to do so.

5 – Advertising

There are no ads by topics yet.

Confidentiality

In terms of privacy, Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, can collect a lot of data from the app, such as health, fitness, purchases, financial information, location, contacts, and more.

And the American newspaper writes, commenting on this: “If you are a Facebook or Instagram user, a lot of data has accumulated about you over the years, expect this to be just another application that does it.”

Threads vs. Twitter

Threads certainly seems to be Twitter’s closest competitor, with a newspaper report stating that Threads outperforms most of Twitter’s previous competitors as it uses Instagram to build an immediate base.

According to Mark Zuckerberg’s own Threads account, within the first seven hours of the app’s launch, Threads had over ten million followers.
