New Study Shows Regular Sleep Schedule Lowers Risk of Early Death by 40%

The Importance of a Regular Sleep Schedule for Longevity

The Study

Researchers at Harvard Medical School found that participants in a new study who followed a regular and healthy sleep schedule had a 40% lower risk of early death than those who didn’t.

The Importance of Consistent Sleep

This means consistently getting seven to nine hours of sleep.

The research team used data from the Multiethnic Atherosclerosis Study (MESA), a clinical trial sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), to evaluate 1,750 participants over a median follow-up of seven years.

About 1,015 participants were classified as “normal sleepers” and 744 were considered “irregular,” according to Medscape, which reviewed the study. During the follow-up period, 176 people died.

Expanding the Conversation About Sleep

According to a study by John Chong, the results point to the benefits of expanding the public conversation about “a good night’s sleep” and expanding that goal of getting a good night’s sleep, respectively, on weekdays and weekends.

The results were presented at a regular meeting of professional sleep societies in Indianapolis, Indiana, last week.

The Dangers of Lack of Sleep

Lack of sleep has long been linked to chronic health problems such as heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, obesity, and depression.

The Recommendation for Consistent Sleep

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends going to bed at the same time every night and waking up at the same time every morning, even on weekends.

Conclusion

The study highlights the importance of consistent sleep for longevity and overall health. It is important to prioritize a regular sleep schedule in order to decrease the risk of early death and chronic health problems.
