Apple’s VP hire for GM marks another milestone in software development.

General Motors (GM) has recruited Mike Abbott, the former head of cloud services at Apple, to become its executive vice president of software. Abbott will report to GM CEO Mary Barra and lead the firm’s reorganised software team, which focuses on software-defined vehicle and operating systems, digital technology and digital business. GM is aiming to develop software-defined vehicles that will offer apps and other features to consumers through over-the-air updates. The company also expects software and subscription services to generate $20bn to $25bn in revenue by 2030. Abbott will oversee teams led by Scott Miller, vice president of software defined vehicle and operating system, Stacy Lynett, vice president of information and digital technology, and Edward Kummer, chief digital officer.
