Dr. Anton Rezaev, an otolaryngologist, said that in order to overcome addiction to vasoconstricting nose drops, it is necessary to gradually abandon them.
The Russian doctor pointed out in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper that addiction to vasoconstrictor nose drops is caused by their improper use, for example, by using them longer than the specified period.
According to him, prolonged use of these drops often leads to an increase in the common cold and becomes chronic. This usually occurs against the background of the curvature of the nasal septum. And due to the ongoing swelling of the mucous membrane, the mucus freezes inside the sinuses, which can lead to ulceration, the development of inflammation and even meningitis.
To get rid of this addiction to drops, you do not need to abruptly stop using them, but you need to gradually reduce the dose and replace it with less concentrated ones, for example, intended for children. In all cases, it is best to consult a doctor.
And he says: “It is recommended to use special lotions that moisturize the nose, and sprays based on sea water, as well as rinse the nose with saline solutions during the period of refusing nose drops.”
According to him, there are drugs that have a positive effect on the treatment of dependence on vasoconstrictor drops in the nose. These drugs gradually reduce the severity of the symptoms of inflammation, including swelling, making the drops very easy to move away. These drugs are not addictive, but it is recommended to use them only as directed by a doctor.
In addition, the doctor recommends paying attention to the temperature and humidity of the air in the room. Because high temperature leads to dry mucus and swelling of the nasal mucosa. Therefore, the best indoor air temperature is 20-22 degrees Celsius, and the relative humidity is 50-60 percent.
