Buenos Aires, May 6 – Russian citizens and diplomats planted a small garden near the capital of Ecuador in memory of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War, Russian Ambassador to Ecuador Vladimir Sprinthen told the News Agency.
The ceremony was attended by citizens, members of the “Victory Volunteers” movement, alumni, representatives of the Pichincha district government, embassy staff and members of their families. The event is being held in Ecuador for the second time.
The Garden of Memory is timed to the upcoming Victory Day celebration. Its main goal is to plant 27 million trees in memory of all those who died during the Great Patriotic War. The campaign was held for the first time in 2020. Then more than 300 thousand people from 85 Russian regions and more than 50 countries joined the large-scale initiative. The Garden of Memory was also supported by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who planted a tree at the Rzhev Memorial to a Soviet Soldier.
A “Middle of the World” garden was laid out around the monument, anchored to the proposed line where the southern and northern hemispheres meet. Only later it turned out that the equator extends a little to the side, more than 200 meters from the monument. However, this place still attracts thousands of tourists.
