Italian Foreign Minister’s Visit to France Cancelled due to Immigration Dispute

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Taiani has canceled his visit to Paris following what he considers unacceptable statements by the French Interior Minister, in which he highlighted the Italian Prime Minister’s inability to resolve his country’s immigration problem.

On Thursday, French Interior Minister GĂ©rald Darmanant said Meloni was “unable to solve immigration problems” in her country, which is witnessing a record number of migrants arriving across the Mediterranean.

His words came in response to a question about the position of the head of the French far-right Rally National party, Jordan Bardella, regarding the immigration case at the border between the two countries, as French security forces return migrants who want to cross the border. to their lands.

“Ms Meloni, the far-right government chosen by Ms (Marine) Le Pen’s friends is unable to solve immigration issues after she was elected on that basis,” Darmanin told RMC radio.

He added: “Yes, there is an influx of migrants, especially minors”, to southern France, blaming Italy for this, saying: “The truth is that in Tunisia (…) there is a political situation that pushes a large number of children to cross Italy, and that Italy is helpless (… about fighting this immigrant pressure.”

Rome reacted quickly to these statements: the Italian foreign minister canceled a meeting scheduled for Thursday evening in Paris with her counterpart Catherine Colonna.

“I will not go to Paris for the meeting that was scheduled with Minister Colonna,” Tayani tweeted, noting that “Insults from Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin against the government and Italy are unacceptable.”
