Washington, May 03 – The Pentagon said on Wednesday that the United States will also transfer 155mm howitzers to Ukraine as part of a new military aid package.
“The authorization is the Biden administration’s 37th allocation of equipment stored at the Department of Defense to Ukraine since August 2021 and includes ammunition for HIMARS provided by the United States and additional howitzers, artillery shells, mortars, and anti-tank capabilities to Ukraine… estimated at up to $300 million.”
The list of assigned weapons specifies that we are talking about 155 mm howitzers.
Earlier Wednesday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he had authorized another $300 million military aid package for Ukraine.
It was noted that the new assistance package includes additional supplies of HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems, as well as shells for howitzers and other types of artillery, anti-tank weapons, small arms, trucks and trailers for transporting heavy equipment.
Russia has previously sent a memorandum to NATO countries over the supply of weapons to Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has indicated that any shipment containing weapons to Ukraine would become a legitimate target for Russia. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that NATO countries were “playing with fire” by supplying arms to Ukraine. The press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Peskov, noted that the injection of weapons into Ukraine from the West does not contribute to the success of the Russian-Ukrainian negotiations and will have a negative impact. Lavrov stated that the United States and NATO are directly involved in the conflict in Ukraine, “including not only the supply of weapons, but also the training of personnel … in the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and other countries.”
