Apple CEO Tim Cook, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and Amazon CEO Andy Jassy received subpoenas for records and emails. Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, was oddly absent from the panel even though it is one of the most widely used social media platforms.

Republicans on the U.S. House Judiciary Committee want to know if the federal government “colluded” with tech firms to “suppress free expression” on matters like COVID-19. The House Judiciary Committee “attempted to engage” with Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, and Alphabet since last year, according to Jordan, who announced the subpoenas, but to no avail.

By March 23, Apple and the other businesses must turn over any correspondence they have had with the U.S. government regarding issues including content moderation, deletion, and limited distribution.
