Cost of living: ‘Massive concern’ over homeless deaths – as desperate rough sleepers turn to unique initiatives | UK News

There are serious concerns about the death of the homeless in Scotland could take off this winter cost of life crisis escalates.

The charitable organization Simon Community, which supporting record numbers of vulnerable peoplereported number to Sky News of Scots suffering from homelessness are of ‘great concern’.

Recent official figures from national records of Scotland (NRS) identified approximately 250 homeless people died last yearwhich is about 50% higher how in 2017.

Lorraine McGrath, chief executive of the charity, said: “Things are getting worse. over in last three to four years, which is a serious problem.

“Overwhelming majority of those people are under the age of 45.

“It’s because of huge health disparities they face stress on them body which leads to premature aging, which leads to long-term conditions that may well be easily curable.

“Homeless people don’t enjoy same access to health care, which increases their risk of early death.”

LDC data also confirms the number of children a life in temporary residence in Scotland rose to highest level since recording started in 2002.

Olivia McKay of Street Friends Aberdeen said: “I started over a year back and we saw up up to 20 people day by giving them blankets, sleeping bags, food and clothing.

“Now, because of in cost of living crisisWe see up up to 65 people day.”

There are others unique initiatives taken by individuals on a community level up help.

In a residential complex in highland city of Inverness is Gillian McCann who making foil blankets for homeless using recycled chips bags.

Saleswoman refurbished her spare room in to the workshop where she irons materials together to create large sheets and told Sky News she provided more than 600 items topics in need.

Shona Robison, Scottish government cabinet secretary for social justice housing and local government said death of homeless people are a tragedy and “something that we want to avoid”.

She continued: “Our approach is to get people in for placement, but also flow around support to help get rid of addiction, mental health. We provide funding through local governments.

“None should gotta sleep rough in Scotland, that’s why we work with local authorities to determine further solutions.
