Police said the man died after falling off a bridge into the Thames during his arrest.
Patrol car was tagged down stop where a man and a woman were involved in “verbal skirmish” on kingston bridge in south west London around 10:30 pm on Friday evening.
After the accusation of theft, the staff began to detain the man, but he entered the water.
The police say the man who it is believed that it was in he is 20 years old, but has not been publicly named, has not been in handcuffs at the time.
fire brigade, RNLI, Marine Corps unit of the Metropolitan Police and a helicopter were called to help save the man and body was pulled out of the water about two hours after.
The paramedics tried to resuscitate him, but he was dead. His family it was said.
The cordon is still in place on Kingston Bridge and investigations are ongoing.
The incident was referred to Independent Management for Police behavior, police watchdog.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Lawrence Taylor said: “My thoughts and those of Metropolitan Police Service, with friends and family of that man who Unfortunately, he died after this incident.
“I fully appreciate public will be very concerned. We of well share this concern.”
