WASHINGTON: The United States said Thursday it supports democratic principles in Pakistan after former prime minister Imran Khan, outspoken critic of Washington, got slapped with accusations.
“We support peaceful upholding of democratic, constitutional and legal principles,” State Department spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters.
“The United States appreciates our longstanding partnership with Pakistan and has always considered a prosperous and democratic Pakistan critical US interests,” he said.
He declined weigh in more specifically on accusations against Imran Khan, who was banished in parliamentary vote in April, but hopes to return in elections.
Imran Khan staged anti-rail rallies against his successor, Shehbaz Sharif, and announced the conspiracy against orchestrated by the United States, allegations repeatedly denied in Washington as baseless.

Pair of days ago in the United States also declined to comment on allegations of terrorism against Imran Khan saying it’s not side with political party this is an internal matter of Pakistan.
US State Department spokesman Ned Price said the country “of of course” in the know of accusation reports. But he said it’s a matter of Pakistani legal and judicial system.
“No, it’s not like that directly question for USA and that’s because we don’t have a position on one political candidate or party against any other political candidate or party”.
State Department Representative added that the United States supports the “peaceful upholding of of democratic, constitutional and legal principles in Pakistan and environs world”.
