Boris Johnson met leaders from some of The largest energy companies in the UK on Thursday to discuss cost of life crisis.
Johnson was accompanied by Chancellor Nadhim Zahavi and business and energy secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng. Zahavi subsequently stated that the energy companies had agreed to “do more to help in people who most need it,” but did not elaborate on what that would entail.
The leaders were from power- generating companies – owning assets including wind farms and nuclear power stations, not oil and gas companies hit contingency tax, officially known as the energy income tax, after in unprecedented profit caused in part of the war in Ukraine.
However, the risk remains that the tax could be extended power generating companies amid allegations of also enjoyed a bonanza from high energy prices.
