A “huge luggage carpet” was spotted outside terminal at UK’s busiest airport as staff struggle with “current issue with baggage system”.
The scene was recorded by Sky News Defense and Security Editor Deborah Haynes as she left Terminal 2 Heathrow after early evening arrival from Brussels.
She said: “In warning signs that all was not well were clear upon baggage claim.
“There were clusters of suitcases without owners, grouped around various conveyor belts.
“I wondered where the owners were.”
Haynes was asked to put her carry-on in the hold of the aircraft before its flight, as there was no space for it’s on board.
Luckily, she said she only had to wait “a little”. for it’s after her arrival.
But she added: “Then when I stepped outside I could see this crazy mass of suitcases on the sidewalk like huge luggage rack.
“I never saw anything like It.
“Though it seemed to be trying to create organized chaos.
“It looks like the officials were trying to organize the suitcases. next to the poles with alphabet letters stuck on them – maybe it was to fit with title of owner of every bag.
“It looked like epic a task.”
sky news international affairs editor Dominic Waghorn was at the same terminal on Friday night and said: “Passengers are being told that they may not receive their luggage. for two days.
“One of the passengers could be heard saying, ‘But tomorrow I’m climbing Kilimanjaro.’ need all my things.”
A Heathrow spokesman said: “Earlier today there was a technical issue with Terminal 2 luggage system which is now resolved.
“Passengers can now check-in as usual, but of passengers who those who departed Terminal 2 earlier today may have traveled without baggage.
“We work closely with airlines bundling passengers with their luggage soon as possible.
“We regret that passenger transportation was disrupted.”
It happens in a few weeks of road chaos, with various airports in UK and across Europe struggling cope with peak summer season while short of workers.
The airlines have faced the same personnel problems, as a result in hundreds of Cancellation over in past month.
Earlier, Heathrow chief executive John Holland-Kay told Sky News that airport passengers have faced only small delays.
He defended the industry against criticism of this is failure deal with Return of traveler demand after two years of COVID lockdowns.
