“I never thought that I had need for this type of high-powered automatic weapons,” Manchin told CNN. on Monday. “I like shoot, i like go out and hunt. I like go out sports shooting. i do everything of what. But I never felt like I needed anything of this value.”
“It depends on what they, how they would come to him,” Manchin said. – I am open to everything that does gun meaning.”
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer wants a deal done by this week, but both sides aren’t sure if they can get it.
As long as Democrats can pass gun bills through the chamber on strength of a party-line vote as they plan to do this week, vote math away more difficult in Senate. Democrats control the tightest possible majority in camera with only 50 places and will be need at least 10 Republicans to break the filibuster and advance any potential gun package.
In an interview on Monday, Manchin claimed that the two new laws may prevent some of recent mass shootings: requires people to be between 21 and buy powerful rifles and the introduction of minimum government standards to create red flag laws. The two elements are part of bipartisan talks, but Senate sources expressed skepticism about raising the age for gun shopping will be included in Any final package because of the resistance of the Republican Party.
“Every time we tried to do something after such a terrible, terrible tragedy like this, people said, “Well, it wouldn’t prevent it, it wouldn’t prevent it,” Manchin said. “Well we know we can do something that would prevent this: raise the age. Manufacturing sure that age at least gives us a chance to work with this person, to see, evaluate and have a little maturity for them. And second the point is that we know that red flag laws do work as long as there is due process.”
Republicans pushed back on raising the age to 21, with some point to a 2-1 solution in 9th U.S. District Court of Appeals establishing that the ban on 18- to 20-year Old people buying guns is unconstitutional though full panel of the court did not rule of cause.
“I’d say it’s going to be controversial,” Cornyn told CNN. of raising the age to 21. “But it’s being discussed.”
Manchin rejected the argument that raising the age is unconstitutional. “Why do we have a driver license? Why is there a certain age for everything we do in is this a society? – he asked. – It has always been accepted. So I don’t see how this is one a thing can be different from other things we do.”
“Oh, online sales have to be careful of” Manchin said.
As Democrats try to see if a deal can be struck this week, Manchin said negotiations should continue in next a week if the senators are close to an agreement.
“I think if we’re close to an agreement, yes, I won’t push for something that blows the whole thing up. up” Manchin said.
