ISLAMABAD: federal government will soon appoint a commission to investigate the events of May 21. arrest of Pakistani Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Dr. Shirin Mazari informed the Islamabad High Court (IHC). on Monday Additional Attorney General Sohail Mehmood.
IHC called illegal arrest of Dr. Mazari in registered land deed with Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) and led the federal government set up a judicial commission to investigate.
The Court held that since Dr. Mazari is a member of parliament, she cannot be arrested without the permission of the Speaker of the National Assembly. According to the IHC, she has not been notified by the ECP and the speaker has not yet accepted her resignation. The court ruling asked the authorities concerned to find out how Shiren Mazari was arrested without going through the prescribed procedure.
Chief Justice Athar Minallah remarked that “this incident is not first of kind. Abuse of power government officials leading to unlawful and unlawful deprivation of the rights to freedom remained unchecked, despite consistent observations made by this court.
“Law enforcement agencies for the reasons best they are known to have failed make criminals of crime responsible”.
The court ordered the federal government investigate “persistent abuse of power public officials” and detain “guilty of crime accountable.
