Why me left UK is broken children and young peoplemental health service | mental health

BUT record 420 314 children and young people a month of treatment for mental health problemsaccording to latest NHS numbers. Here is a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist who until recently worked for the NHS Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) describe frustrating and relentless daily battle meet soaring demand and help those same in need.

Until last year I worked as a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist for the NHS CAMHS. I have devoted 20 years of his life to achieve this position, and worked in specialty close to my heart.

I first got interested in child psychiatry at 12year-old when I spent the summer volunteering in Romanian hostel. There I saw first-manual effects of trauma and neglect of mental health and child development. I knew that this field of work I wanted to work in and hoped that early intervention would have a profound effect on outcomes of children who need help.

But after 15 years of work in NHS, along with extremely dedicated and dedicated colleagues, I made difficult decision resign because I couldn’t be a part anymore of a system which is clearly broken and can no longer provide the early intervention that is so important in so many cases.

While CAMHS was stretched for many years, with long wait times and limited availability of therapeutic services, the Covid-19 pandemic and its aftermath stopped the service.

waiting times increased in some cases from one year up to three years. Many children now they say they don’t match threshold for CAMHS despite being suicidal or restricting food intake to dangerously low levels. One young autistic girl with eating difficulties struggled to get any help as of huge demand for treatment. By the time I saw her in CAMHS, her mother told me that she only eats one stick of celery a day. Unfortunately she was one of many in the same position.

As well as acute mental health problems, similar difficulties are experienced by families seeking a diagnosis. for autism and ADHD. Many of they were not considered “high riskand therefore not a priority. A lot of girls on the autism spectrum often doesn’t even get to the evaluation stages because they get screened out using CAMHS questionnaires, which often fail to detect autism among high-functioning girls.

Although this may help reduce waiting lists, for many girls it leads to lack of understanding of the main problems of the development of the nervous system and culminates in abundance of comorbid psychiatric disorders such as self-harm and anxiety disorder.

I shared the same disappointments as many of my CAMHS patients, who It was in many cases waited years to see me. I noticed with my husband that families often get angry before they even have time met me. With anticipation times as long as they are, I can understand why.

Children and their families are not just face waiting for long delays for care. Even getting a referral or an examination from the right healthcare professional can mean having to navigate a really difficult situation. complicated system.

Most of the days I felt like if I could only see a child in in a timely manner, I might have been able to prevent need for this child to take antidepressants is what I like mother of two, will strive avoid for my children.

I left CAMHS with heavy heart because the plight of many children in UK needs help for mental health problems is no different now children I met 25 years ago in Romanian orphanages.

With record numbers of children and young people now goes forward help in commemoration of pandemic, it is absolutely essential that CAMHS be properly funded so that it can help all those in need.
