ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Thursday said he could confirm that his predecessor, PTI Chairman Imran Khan, took gifts from Toshakhany and sold them abroad.
“Imran Khan sold these gifts for 140 million rupees in Dubai,” the prime minister reportedly told reporters during iftar. hosted the day before in federal capital.
The prime minister is reported to have shared expensive gifts that former prime minister Imran Khan traded for money includes diamond jewelry sets, bracelets and wristwatches.
Prime Minister Shehbaz said he also received the watch once, but handed it over to Toshakhana, adding that he “didn’t need hide something.”
The prime minister’s revelation has come in response to a question about the petition asking for clarification of Toshakhan items which was filed in Islamabad Supreme Court on which then-Prime Minister Imran Khan commented that the details could not be revealed under the Official Secrets Act 1923.
Answering a journalist’s question, the Prime Minister explained that according to rules, gifts received from another state or country are deposited in Toshakhan, they say, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) defines gift meaning. Maulana Fazlur Rehman, president of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) opposition alliance, said there were reports that Imran Khan sold a precious watch he received from the prince. “It’s a shame,” he said.
PMLN Vice President Maryam Nawaz tweeted. in Urdu: “Imran Khan sold gifts he received from others. countries.“Caliph Hazrat Umar (satellite of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was held accountable for his shirt and robe and you (Imran Khan), on on the other hand, stolen foreign gifts from Toshakhana and you say of parameter up State of Madina? How can a person (khan) be so insensitive, deaf, dumb and blind? asked daughter of deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
She is also asked where Imran Khan came from money to purchase precious gifts from Toshakhana, as, according to official record [Imran] had no other sources of income other than for his salary as an MNA.
Former federal minister However, PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry denied Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s statement, saying that new prime it”throwing dirt on Imran Khan, and in turn he earns himself bad title. Fawad claimed that Khan bought the watch – he got it from abroad – from government of Pakistan and sold it.
“What is wrong if [then] prime minister sold the watch I bought from government? Fawad asked.
“It doesn’t matter if the clock worth 50 million or 100 million rupees […] if it’s mine and I sold it, there should be no objection.” He said he could not understand what exactly Prime Minister Shehbaz’s statement was.
“Shehbaz Sharif is confused and cannot decide how press charges against Imran Khan,” Fawad said and advised Prime Minister Shehbaz avoid superficial gossip and focus on national questions.
