Miami-Dade District Judge Michael Huntsman approved a multi-million dollar settlement after listening to emotional testimony that brought him to tears times.
“Everything in this case is a victim, there is no doubt about it,” Huntsman said before giving his final OK. “Please know that this judgment does not diminish in any respect for your pain, suffering and trauma you have endured… we have 98 people who lost their lives and this cause must be saved in perspective.”
Heirs of 98 victims were found guilty death class at the time of the hearing, and the surviving condominium owners were named economy class. Lawyers for The Champlain Towers South Condominium Association was also involved in settlement.
The court based its decision on on the basis that the settlement was “fair, reasonable and adequate”, but because of some misgivings, the judge announced two terms he added to the agreement.
“The number of one this settlement will depend on real property closure for at least $120 million,” Huntsman said. – And until that happens, there will be no one the penny is distributed among the owners of the condominium.”
“Secondly, I’m not going to deduct insurance,” he said, adding that instead deduct $750,000 off pinnacle” which the court will use partially offset counsel … as well as for in past the cost of maintaining this property up up to this day”.
In his post-testimony statement, Huntsman acknowledged the law and jurisprudence. system will not be able to “relieve the pain and suffering that these people endure.”
Huntsman also praised the settlement and the lawyers he said worked hard establish this by stating that the court did not wish “Let the perfect be enemy of in good.”
