Apple is resisting having to allow links to external payment service providers, as reported by Reuters. In September a judge ruled that Apple must allow such links or buttons. Because the proceedings are going into another round, Apple demands that the order be put on hold until the final verdict is reached.
Information yes, links no
According to Reuters, the application also shows that Apple would be very willing to provide information about other payment methods to allow. The group only wants to prevent a direct link or “mechanism”.
With this, the group moves a small step away from its original position. But the format, the placement and the content of such texts must be limited.
Apple has achieved partial victory
In the procedure between Fortnite developer Epic Games against Apple and Google is about whether the app store operators prefer their own payment system. In the Apple case, judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers had ruled that Apple’s preference for its own service is permissible. But links to other providers should be allowed.
Apple must implement this decision by December 9th. That would enable developers to bypass Apple’s own payment function and save them having to pay Apple. For Apple this would mean a loss of sales.
However, the judge had decided in favor of Apple on other points. So she considered it permissible for Apple to prefer its own payment system. Originally, Epic also wanted to win the right to its own app store on the iPhone. So Epic Games appealed, so the process is still ongoing.
