Iran’s chief negotiator Ali Bagheri said today, Wednesday, that Iran will return to nuclear talks before the end of November, paving the way for the first talks since June on restoring the 2015 nuclear deal, according to the Wall Street Journal. US and European hopes of reviving the nuclear deal have faded sharply in recent months since hardline Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi took office.
Iran has repeatedly said it will continue negotiations but has refused to set a date.
The Biden administration has identified reviving the 2015 nuclear deal as a foreign policy goal, and said it hopes to use it as a platform to negotiate a longer and stronger deal with Iran, but senior US officials have warned that time is running out to revive the agreement given the Iran’s progress in nuclear technology.
The United States withdrew from the nuclear deal in May 2018 under President Trump and reimposed comprehensive sanctions on Tehran.
