McCree will be named Cole Cassidy from October 26. Blizzard is also planning a new story within Overwatch, in which McCree will play a major role. However, due to the name change, this new narrative will be postponed until later this year.
In August, Blizzard announced that McCree would be getting a name change. McCree is named after Jesse McCree, the former chief designer of Diablo 4. He is no longer with the company after being named in Activision Blizzard’s lawsuit by the state of California. That charge revolves around the discrimination, sexual harassment and inequality that the state says prevails in the workplace of the company. McCree departed along with Diablo 4 director Luis Barriga and World of Warcraft designer Jonathan LeCraft. McCree was specifically named in the indictment for his work behavior.
Blizzard also said that in-game characters will no longer be named after Blizzard employees. “We’re going to think more carefully about adding references to real-world elements in future Overwatch content.”
