Collaboration tools help with IT complexity

According to Gartner, the use of collaboration tools in companies has increased by 44 percent since 2019. The company bases this on the fact that it consulted 10 080 full-time employees in companies with at least 100.

Only one third of the company meetings took place in person in 2021, compared to 63% in 2019, which is partly due to staying at home and the rise of collaborative tools. Over the next three years, Gartner forecasts that only a quarter of corporate meetings will be held in person.

The use of real-time mobile messaging and storage and sharing solutions has also increased over the past three years, while training and the adoption of staff development tools has remained unchanged.

The use of collaboration tools has now become the norm for most companies. In addition to chat applications, integrations and features have made platforms more complex and embedded in enterprise systems.

For technology leaders, increased acceptance has put collaboration solutions at the heart of the technology stack. In the longer term, technology will require more coordination with the rest of IT management.

“As these applications become more interconnected and interoperable, at least some cross-functional team will be needed to help control and administration should be in line with the rest of the business, “said Christopher Trueman, senior analyst at Gartner.

Corporate asset selection can affect operations. From security to digital transformation, a company’s ability to work together affects performance. Naveen Chhabra, a senior analyst at Forrester, said the fact that apps like collaboration or email are mostly cloud-based has changed the way these apps are handled. According to Chhabra, this does not mean that companies do not have to manage these applications, but the way they used to manage them has changed to a much more self-sustaining, automation-driven way of working.

However, as additional IT support is needed, some vendors have started training admins focused on managing their platform. If organizations insist on the model of having platform-specific IT professionals, in the future these types of specialists will work much more closely with their colleagues in charge of other services than in the past, according to Trueman.
