Penny is the first discounter in Germany to try out the delivery business. The grocery chain, which belongs to the Rewe Group, is starting tests in three major German cities in cooperation with the Hamburg-based delivery service startup Bringoo.

Penny now also delivers – making it the first discounter in Germany whose goods will soon end up on their own doorstep by courier. The chain of stores from the Rewe Group begins with the delivery project in the three major cities of Cologne, Berlin and Hamburg, which will be delivered by the Bringoo grocery delivery service. The start of the delivery business in Germany cannot yet be found on its own website, but the plans were confirmed by a Penny spokeswoman.

According to her, the pilot project should only begin with fewer than ten penny markets in the three major cities. As the food newspaper reports, the delivery service is to be integrated into the Penny app and on the discounter’s website. Customers can probably order online from the complete Penny range at market prices; delivery should generally cost EUR 2.90. Customers can order a maximum of 20 kilograms, which Bringoo should then deliver to their own doorstep.

Bringoo: delivery in 45 minutes

The food delivery service comes from Hamburg and is currently only available there as well as in Berlin and Cologne, which fits the planned Penny delivery area. The startup, which has existed since 2019, says it wants to support local markets and promises delivery of the ordered goods in a maximum of 45 minutes. It’s quick, but the young company can’t keep up with the Berlin startup Gorillas, whose delivery time promise is a maximum of ten minutes.

The young company is also entering a hot market in other ways. Gorillas and Flink are already active in the German food delivery market, and Foodpanda has also announced that it will also deliver food in the future. Still, Bringoo appears to be the only delivery company that delivers penny products. It is not yet known exactly when the delivery service will start.
