Skysphere: the autonomous Audi that changes the wheelbase at the touch of a button

Concept of the German brand adapts the bodywork to two driving modes: the autonomous Grand Toruing and the sports

Audi unveiled the skysphere concept that marks the direction of the brand for a future electric and autonomous driving guided by luxury. And it is in this direction that the two-door convertible concept that will be presented this week at Pebble Beach integrates its most innovative feature: the possibility of changing the wheelbase according to the desired driving at the press of a button.

The wheelbase can be increased or reduced in a movement accompanied by the bodywork with elements sliding into others with a distance of change in carriage length of 250 mm; at the same time that the ground clearance is adjusted to 10 mm according to the set driving mode.

In the mode GT for a Grand Touring experience that the electric roadster provides with autonomous driving, the skysphere runs on its 5.19 m long (like an A8 L) maximizing the space for the occupants in an interior digital ecosystem with retracted steering wheel and pedals.

Activated by a button the Sport mode, the skysphere shortens to a dimension of 4.94 m (like an RS 5) and built-in steering wheel and pedals appear to be controlled by the conductor. The width and height of the trolley are, respectively, 1.77 m and 1.23 m.

The Audi skysphere concept is equipped with an electric motor positioned in the rear exido generating 465 kW (624 hp) of power and 750 Nm of torque. Weighing 1,800 kg (about 60% in the rear half where the battery modules are also), the e-roadster does 0-100 km/h and 4 seconds and the battery of around 80 kWh will allow you to an autonomy of more than 500 km (in GT mode).

The four Steering wheels, steering electronically managed by a ‘steer-by-wire’ system, or adaptive suspension are other features that benefit driving, combined with 23” alloy aerodynamic wheels.

On the stylish exterior, LED elements fill the front without the need for a grille, as well as the slender rear in a luminous signature that changes depending on the way you drive. In the interior prepared to provide level 4 of autonomous driving, the Art Deco design combines sustainable materials with a digitization in which the large touchscreen 1415 mm wide and 180 mm high stands out.

Details of another luxury that are already announced are in specific bags for the Audi skysphere concept to carry in the rear, while at the front there will be two golf bags also specific for that model.
