According to information from Firefox expert Sören Hentzschel, Mozilla is working on a new fee-based Offer that is to combine three existing services. According to Hentzschel, there are internal mockups that show that the offer includes Mozilla’s VPN service, the mail forwarding service Firefox Relay and the data leakage warning service Firefox Monitor. There will also be a smartphone app that combines all three services as well as various information on the subject of data protection under one interface. The offer should be named Mozilla Privacy Pack.
According to Hentzschel’s information, monthly prices between 9.99 and 12.99 US dollars are currently under discussion. For comparison: Mozilla’s VPN service currently costs EUR 4.99 per month with a twelve-month term. The Firefox Relay mail forwarding service, which is designed to protect users from spam, is free. According to information from Hentzschel, the service is to be expanded as part of the Mozilla Privacy Pack. While the free relay version allows a maximum of five forwarding addresses, there will be no upper limit as part of the new offer. In addition, it should be possible to choose your own subdomain for the forwarding addresses.
The Firefox Monitor service, which is free in itself, is to be expanded as part of the new offer. Paying customers can then store any number of e-mail addresses there in order to be informed of any data leaks. According to Hentzschel, there should also be the option for Firefox to delete the data from the websites concerned.
Mozilla Privacy Pack: If and when the package comes, remains unclear
The existence of the internal mockups actually only proves that the Firefox makers are considering a corresponding offer. However, the range of functions could still change before it becomes a real product. In addition, it remains completely unclear when Mozilla will offer the product.
Mozilla has been trying for a long time to develop additional sources of income. In the past, the makers of the open source browser Firefox were mainly dependent on payments from search engine providers such as Google. At the end of 2020, Mozilla boss Mitchell Baker announced massive restructuring and laid off 250 employees.
