IT and business leaders continue to debate technology procurement

According to a survey published recently by Spiceworks Ziff Davis (SWZD), only four out of 10 IT decision-makers trust business leaders to make informed technology purchasing decisions. The company interviewed 300 IT and 200 business decision makers.

However, 58 percent of business decision makers believe they are well informed enough to buy technology, the SWZD said. IT decision-makers report 88 percent of cloud-based purchases, according to the report. On average, six to eight key stakeholders are involved in cloud procurement decisions. Although organizations expect guidance from the CIO on technology equipment, purchasing decisions are not made by them.

The number of stakeholders within companies purchasing technology solutions has expanded, said Toby Harris, CEO of Quartz Network. Within an organization, leaders are “sitting in a managerial chair who basically determine what technologies they use,” Harris said.

The trend is due in part to easier deployment of cloud-based technologies. The lower entry barrier means that more parts of the company can experiment with trying out technology solutions, which is a strategic concern for shadow IT.

Remote office (home office) increased technology last year led to his emphasis. Interest remains, with 80 percent of decision-makers reporting that cloud-based technologies are useful in supporting teleworkers

The ecosystem of technologies available to business and IT managers is also becoming increasingly complex. “The number of technologies and solution providers serving the business user area has exploded,” Harris said. According to Snow Software and IDC Connect, more than two-thirds of IT executives report that nearly half of IT spending is controlled by individual business units.

In order to address the challenges of procuring technology assets, the CIO is responsible for present a strategy that allows technologies to be brought together. “The role of the CIO is largely to help bring these different platforms together,” Harris said.
