PS5 in wood look: This Youtuber shows how it's done

Remember Article

An adventurous Youtuber gave the Sony console a new look in a DIY video. He used carbon and walnut wood to help.

Matthew -Matt- Perks has been showing creative builds and conversions on the DIY Perks channel since 2012. He likes to convert used innards from modern devices into self-made housings. For example, he shows how defective Airpods are used to power self-made Bluetooth boxes. In his current project he is working on the Playstation 5. The console’s housing has been subject to much criticism in the past. Among other things, users complained that the device did not fit into widespread Ikea shelves.

New look, different format

Matt opts for a housing made of carbon and walnut wood that can be set up either horizontally or vertically. He notes that the inner workings of the PS5 are surprisingly compact and can be placed in a less expansive case. No sooner said than done: he places the hardware from the inside on a carbon base plate. As in the original, it uses foam to regulate the ventilation flow. Relatively conventional tools are used until the ventilation slots are milled out. But then Matt uses a CNC wood milling machine, which is probably not found in the very few households of his audience. The Youtuber comes up with a clever solution for its connection cover: It also serves as a power button.

A matter of taste, but a good suggestion

How you like Matt’s solution is in the eye of the viewer. He achieved his goal of making the Playstation “stealthy” – that is, less conspicuous – in his case. It fits perfectly into the real wood-dominated living environment. The CNC milling machine helps him to create elaborate shapes like a pattern from octagons. The video is a good suggestion for those who want to give their next-gen console a new look. Others may prefer to wait until the rumored redesign of the PS5 comes out from the original manufacturer. And don’t forget: Anyone who dismantles their PS5 will lose all warranty claims.
