After “intensive discussions with partners and exhibitors”, it was decided that Gamescom 2021 should be considered pure host digital event. This is how the announcement of the organizer begins, who goes on to say that too many companies have decided not to take part in “physical events” due to “the still difficult development”.
Gamescom 2021 too early in the year
This means that Gamescom planned for August will once again be purely digital and organized for everyone free of charge. In this way, everyone involved would have planning security. The time in August ultimately turned out to be too early. The organizer is now calling on all interested parties to book their respective participations.
The Cologne Exhibition Center and the Game Association never tire of emphasizing that Gamescom 2020 was already a huge success. Over 100 million video views across all formats and channels, over 50 million unique visitors from 180 countries and 370 partners from 44 countries were recorded digitally.
Compared to 2020: Digital offer is to be expanded
Gamescom wants to build on these numbers in 2021. Therefore, according to Felix Falk, the managing director of the Association of the German Games Industry, the digital offering is to be expanded significantly this year: “For digital Gamescom 2021, we are concentrating on offering even more games, reach and a community atmosphere can. With Gamescom Epix, for example, we are relying on a completely new concept that sends the community on a joint quest journey on social media before Gamescom starts. With this we want to transfer even more of the unique Gamescom atmosphere into the digital world. Together with our numerous partners, we want to make Gamescom the largest games event in the world again in 2021. “

As planned, Gamescom 2021 will also start as a digital event on Monday, August 23, 2021, with the core days – after the opening night on Wednesday – falling again on Thursday and Friday. Some of the offers should remain available over the following weekend.
