Canada claims another citizen detained in Yantai, China amid diplomatic tensions

A Canadian resident has been detained in the Chinese city of Yantai, a Canadian federal government representative stated on Saturday, an occurrence that comes in the middle of chilly democratic relations between the two countries.

Connections in between China and also Canada nosedived last December after Vancouver cops restrained Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies Carbon Monoxide, on a UNITED STATE arrest warrant. Beijing requires her return.

Global Affairs did not say or offer more information about whether the case was connected to the detention of 19 people previously in the week.

On Tuesday, police in Xuzhou stated it had restrained 19 people on drug-related charges which 16 of them were foreigners. Yantai has to do with 620 km (385 miles) away from Xuzhou.

China’s state radio said some of the detained individuals were teachers at an English education and learning center operated by EF Education First, an independently held Swiss company that runs in 114 countries.

After Meng’s arrest, China restrained two Canadians, charging them of involvement in stealing state secrets.

The British Consular Office in Beijing claimed on Friday that four British nationals had been apprehended in eastern China.
