Empireco-creator and director Lee Daniels is speaking out about the personal pain triggered by the current Jussie Smollett case.
Talking ToNew Yorkmagazine, Daniels went over theEmpireactor’s failure in the middle of accusations he perpetuated a hate crime hoax in Chicago in January. Daniels originally provided a statement in support of Smollett when the news initially broke that the actor was the victim of an evident homophobic and racist attack, but then Chicago police said he faked the attack with the aid of two partners in order to get attention and anEmpirepay raise (Smollett has maintained that he is innocent of the claims and the charges were dropped in March).
” I’m beyond ashamed,” Daniels stated. “I think that when it happened, I had a flash of me running from bullies. I had a flash of my entire life, of my childhood, my youth, getting beaten.”
The magazine asked if there was “any doubt in his mind” that Smollett didn’t comprise the attack.
” Of course, there’s some doubt,” he stated. “I’m telling you that because I love him a lot. That’s the torture that I remain in right now, since it’s literally if it were to happen to your child and your child, how would you feel? You would feel,Please, God, please let there be that twinkle of hope that there is some reality in this story.That’s why it’s been so uncomfortable. It was a flood of discomfort.”
Daniels has formerly validated that Smollett will not be returning for the sixth and final season ofEmpire
” We remain in the writers’ room right now, going over [Empire’s final] fantastic, bombastic season, which is going to shake you by your roots,” Daniels promised.
On the other hand, Smollett went back to social media on Monday for the very first time because the alleged attack. According to PEOPLE, the actor shared a clip on Instagram ofMoonlight‘s Oscar-winning film writer Tarrell Alvin McCraney discussing his playChoir Kidand captioned the video “A lot #PRIDE.” Smollett turned handicapped commenting for the post.
